Glossary

Limited Edition Print – This varies from company to company. Limited Edition print means that there will only ever be a certain number of prints produced (this is the edition size) and once these are sold there will be no more available as wall art. The prints are sometimes hand embellished and are always signed and numbered in pencil by the artist.
Images still may be used on greetings cards and products.

Open Edition Print – An open edition print can be produced in any quantity and is not signed by the artist. Open editions tend to cost less than limited editions and are much less likely to increase in value.

Dutch Metal - It is very malleable and ductile and can be beaten into very thin sheets. It is these sheets that are sold as Dutch Metal, for use as metal leaf or imitation gold leaf.

Stretched paper - Watercolour paper that is less than 200lb will cockle when it is wet. Stretching paper involves soaking the paper until it swells, attaching it to a rigid surface and allowing it to dry until it shrinks and becomes taut. After painting the paper becomes taut again.

Unstretched paper – Paper that has not been through the stretching process.
